Not content with an already successful season, Kempsey CC took the Worcestershire Cricket League Saturday Knock Out Cup to add to their 1st XI league promotion, the Tue Eve League Division 2 championship, The Tansell Cup and the losing finalist trophy in the Thompson Cup.
Saturday 10 Sep 2011 at the Bill Jones Memorial Ground saw Kempsey take on Hallow CC 2nds in the final of the WCL 45 over KO Cup. Winning the toss, Hallow put a delighted Kempsey into bat. The Old Firm opening partnership of Weston and Ohren went about their work putting a rapid 60 runs from 8 overs before in-form Lance Ohren on 42 scoring at a strike rate of 127%, top edged to short mid wicket where the grateful outstretched hand of Graeme Fowler took a tumbling low catch. Weston took up the mantle of attacking batsman and took the score to 83 in the 12th over before he too returned to the pavilion having been judged out LBW for an unusually low 34. Ishtiaq Hussain (7) and Shaun Tolley (17) both struggled with the line and length of Young before he eventually took their wickets. At this point with score on 117 for 4 after only 17 overs, Hallow CC looked relaxed and very much in the game. However a partnership of 78 for the 5th wicket in only 10 overs began to seal the game for Kempsey. Skipper 'Barny' Akhtar scored a superb quickfire 41 off only 27 balls and with young Chris Salter at 17 years of age showing a maturity beyond his age almost matched him run for run on 36 from 25. When both were out it was left for the Kempsey tail to carry on the show. The tail enders all chipped in to the best of their ability and the final pair of Rhys Goode (22*) at No 10 and veteran Brian Salisbury (5) at No 11 entertained the Hallow fielders with some glorious strokes plus a fair amount inelegant shots, resolute defence which included all varities of edges and some fortuitous boundaries. Kempsey finally ended their innings in the 44th over with 283 on the board when Morris took his 5th wicket when Salisbury was out LBW.

FOW: 1 - 60, 2 - 83, 3 - 100, 4 - 117, 5 - 195, 6 - 216, 7 - 225, 8 - 232, 9 - 250 & 10 - 283

Hallow began their innings reply with extraordinary caution scoring just 15 runs off the first 7 overs before they needlessly lost the wicket of Williams (10) attempting an optimistic run. Tucker had found his rhythm early and was bowling with extreme pace forcing the Hallow batsmen onto the back foot and occupied themselves by carving great swathes of fresh air. At the other end Weston dispensed his usual pin point line and length accuracy and after 5 over which included 2 maidens had figures of 7 runs for 1 wicket. It seemed that from that point on, Hallow understood that it was not to be their day and merely went through the motions with only Fowler (top scoring with 34), youngsters Dan Murphy (21) and Hodgetts (20) offering any kind of resistance. Hallow skipper, Dave Mason, was warmly applauded off the pitch by both teams as this was his final match.
Kempsey bowling:
C Weston 12 - 2 - 46 - 2
M Tucker 9.4 - 1 - 47 - 3
S Tolley 8 - 0 - 40 - 3
I Hussain 2 - 0 - 17 - 1

Result: Kempsey won by 129 runs

The Man of the Match award went to Kempsey Cricket Team, such was the collective performance!

Thanks were given to Umpires Chris Forrest & Keith Pressnell for their firm but fair handling and were particularly applauded when Umpire Forrest reprimanded the scorers for an incorrect scoreboard in Kempsey's favour!
Kempsey Cricket Club are looking forward to the 2012 season and are interested if there are any players wishing to join a local club with their own facilities.
