MATCH REPORT
KEMPSEY v ASHTON-UNDER-HILL SUNDAY 24th AUGUST 2003
Winning the toss and electing to bat, Kempsey struggled to find runs. Tight bowling by Fletcher and Hunt kept them to 52 - 1 after 20 over's. Lionel Smith-Keitley (59) with eight fours, and Will Perry (45) with seven fours, played doggedly putting on 110 for the second wicket, ably supported by Eric Hall (18), including one six and two fours, and Andy Newcombe (10 no), to take Kempsey to 157 for 6 wickets after their allotted 40 over's.
Steve Fletcher (16-1), Martin Hunt (8 over's 4 maidens 8 runs 1 wicket), David Hunting (21-2) and Rob Hawker (12-2) the wicket takers for Ashton.
In reply Ashton found the going difficult too, losing both openers in the first two over's, David Turner (26) with three fours, Steve Fletcher (30) with two fours, helped the score to 110 after 30 over's but with the loss of 7 wickets, thanks to some brilliant “superglue catches” by Lionel Smith-Keitley( a boundary catch into the sun), Steve Robins (a one handed diving catch in the slips, off the shoulder of the wicket keeper) and Kevin Thorne who, not renowned for his catching prowess, held on to two stunners, both close-in reaction catches which earned him “man of the match”.
David Whitehouse (23) and Rob Hawker (10) the only other batsmen to reach double figures. Ashton all out for 141 in the 36th over. Kempsey winning by 16 runs, recording their seventh consecutive win.
Eric Hall (20-3), Tom Waters (30-3), Andy Newcombe (29-2) and Will Perry (37-2) the wicket takers for Kempsey.
